“Our regional agricultural achievers deserve this recognition, without them, we would never attain the expected yield and production in our agricultural commodities.” said Dr. Dennis H. Palabrica, Department of Agriculture IX (DA9) assistant director.

This year, the DA in its Regional Achievers Awarding Ceremony held at Mibang Hotel, Dipolog City recognized the unwavering support and contributions of the outstanding Local Government Units (LGU), Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs), and stakeholders in the region.

Ten months since the 3.64 kilometer farm-to-market road was fully concreted from barangays Casacon and Tilasan, the World Bank evaluates if the community within the area have truly benefited from it, especially the farmers.

Despite the adverse climate that plagued Zamboanga Peninsula this week, the Department of Agriculture RFO-9 High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) still carried out its mission to serve and provide for the farmers through its outreach programs held in the municipalities of Bayog and Midsalip in Zamboanga del Sur.

Two hundred local farmers enjoyed free vegetable seeds such as string beans, pechay and calabasa, and rubber seedlings for the farmers in Bayog and cacao seedlings for those from Midsalip, including assorted information materials on crops production.

The City, Municipal, and Provincial Agriculturists and the Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) in Zamboanga Peninsula gathered during the 2nd Regional Agricultural Extension Workers Congress hosted by the Department of Agriculture (DA) at Grand Astoria Hotel, Zamboanga City recently.

This year’s theme: “Working together towards a productive agriculture and rural development” depicted the unity and teamwork of the extension workers wherein 600 participants arrived to join the regional congress.

National evaluators from the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), Mr. Jonarex Z. Miral; Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR), Ms. Pola Mendoza and Ms. Bernalin Cadayong conducted the evaluation last week. The criteria for judging were 20% each for the Kind and Number of Commercialized Processed products; the Degree of Commercialization (Market Coverage); the Innovativeness; the Quality and the Economic Benefits with a total of 100%.

Seven seed companies join the Hybrid rice field day held in barangay Blancia, Molave, Zamboanga del Sur to showcase different hybrid rice varieties that is suitable in the region. More than 1,000 farmers were invited all over the region to witness the harvest and participate in the techno briefing and forum.

The activity aims to promote hybrid rice to farmers and see for themselves the benefits in planting hybrid rice as to its yield per hectare compared to inbred rice.

The Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PhilMech) is mandated to lead in the develop postharvest and mechanization sector of the agriculture industry.

Arnel Ramir Apaga, program leader of Magsasakang Mekaniko program (MMP) said that this aims to establish rural agricultural machinery technicians to cater small farm engine services. “A completion certificate will be given to the participants or the TESDA – NCII skills training certificate equivalent after the participants all the requirement for a certified small farm engine mechanic.” he said.

In the recently concluded Natural Rubber (NR) Technology Forum held in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay province, statistical records show Zamboanga Peninsula as rubber production capital in the country. However, “quality rubber” is an issue, said Agriculture Research Chief Engr. Roger O. Bagaforo.

Bagaforo said that the urgent need of a technology forum is very much in demand in Zamboanga Sibugay province where 80% of the region’s rubber production come from. He said “different technologies for quality rubber production are presented in this forum. We urge rubber farmers and producers to practice what they learn here and stop using materials like battery solution that deter the quality of rubber.”
