The GREAT Women Project 2 or GW2 is a project focusing on capacity building for women involved in micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
The Department of Agriculture RFO IX as implementing partner, the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) as lead agency; has apportioned 5% funding utilization from its regular programs for the Gender and Development (GAD) activities which supports for the GW2 project in the region.
GREAT Women stands for Gender Responsive Economic Actions for the Transformation of Women. With this project, it targets to advocate regulatory and policy reforms to institutionalizeWomen Economic Empowerment (WEE). This would build up entrepreneurial skills to help sustain and make women businesses more profitable.
In the recent orientation workshop held in Manila, DA9 - Agribusiness Division, Supervising Agriculturist Marissa S. Mohammad said that the Great Women Project 2 can locate deserving women groups in the Zamboanga Peninsula. “A number of women agricultural achievers/ women associations have been recognized, including young women organizations, and these women groups can be enrolled in GW2 to be more equipped with necessary entrepreneurial skills to sustain the projects and incomes.”

Brief History

Traces of Modern Philippine agriculture became most visible to the outside World at the height of the Spanish regime when industries were encouraged and develop and supplied the major needs of the colonizer Spain and the other European customers for tobacco, sugar and abaca.

At the proclamation of Philippine Independence on June 12, 1898, which gave birth to the first Philippine Republic under the stewardship of President Emilio Aguinaldo, several offices and agencies were established. The then Department of Agriculture and manufacturing was created through a presidential proclamation on June 23, 1898.

By 1901, a policy of diversification was adopted under American Sovereignty, which gave emphasis to the development of other agricultural products, like rice and other basic commodities, and also fishing, forestry and mining. The insular bureau of Agriculture was then created under the department of interior through Act 271.

“These buildings will not remain as structures but will serve as a healthy and productive workplace to serve the people particularly the clientele of the Department of Agriculture, the farmers and the fisherfolk,” said Engr. Silvano D. Corpuz, Jr. Chief, Integrated Laboratory Division during the recent inauguration of the 11 DA buildings and facilities in Sanito, Ipil, ZamboangaSibugay.

The Integrated Laboratory costs 33Million. It is composed of 11 structures namely the Regional Soils Laboratory, Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Avian Influenza Laboratory, Regional Animal Feed Analysis Laboratory, Aflatoxin Laboratory, Chemical Stockroom, Animal House, Incinerator Building, Meat Laboratory, Tissue Laboratory, and Dormitory.
