Nine barangays in the municipality of Malangas, Zamboanga Sibugay province receive a total of 95 bags of corn seeds.
Through the Corn Commodity program of the Department of Agriculture (DA), barangays Molom, Lipacan, Payag, Bacao, Catituan, Camanga, Tigabon, Logpond and Sinusayan share 45 bags of Open Pollinated Variety (OPV) White corn seeds and 50 bags of Hybrid yellow corn seeds.
According to Desiree D. Arriola, Corn program staff, the seeds were extra seeds from the seed buffer stocks for Zamboanga Sibugay. “After giving to calamity affected areas we equally distributed the remaining seeds to the corn producing municipalities. These seeds are given to farmers for free. DA only requires the masterlists of names.” she said.
During the turnover ceremony cum farmers’ forum, Municipal mayor Marcelo M. Baquial, Jr. reminded his constituents on the responsibility they will bear in receiving the seeds. He said “Plant this seeds not just for your own good but for your community as well. Let’s produce corn of good quality.”
Malangas Municipal Agriculturist Troadio G. Magallanes, Jr. also explained implementation for the provision of corn seeds, that for every bag of corn seeds, it will be shared by two-farmer recipient. “This way, we will have fair distribution to all corn farmers, and one bag can be planted for one-hectare.”
