Some 1,300 participants composed of farmers, stakeholders, extension workers, City and Municipal Agriculturists joined the National Information Caravan conducted by the Department of Agriculture (DA) in partnership with the Local Government of Zamboanga del Norte with the theme: “Agrikultura Para sa Pagbabago” held at Dipolog City Sports Complex, Brgy. Olingan, Dipolog City last week.
“The Information Caravan aims to raise awareness and bring the services of the department to the farmers by providing helpful and reliable information,” said Ms. Cheryl G. Suarez, Information Chief, Agriculture and Fisheries Information Division (DA-AFID).
This is the fourth information caravan conducted in the country after Region 1 in Pangasinan, Region 4 in Batangas, and Region 7 in Dumagute.
During his welcome remarks, Dipolog City Mayor Darel Dexter T. Uy said that Information Caravans are welcome to be staged in Dipolog City to widen the people’s interest and knowledge about agriculture. He also emphasized that he was committed to give his full support to agricultural programs and grateful to host the activity.
Zamboanga del Norte Governor Roberto Y. Uy also gave his full support to the program. He came to boost the participation of the farmers in Zamboanga del Norte.
Regional Director Constancio G. Alama, DA 9 said “the services and interventions of the department will be extended to the farmers to help improve their status. Proper information need to reach the beneficiaries so that productivity and progress can be achieved in the locality. This program will continue so that our farmers will be well – informed and empowered.”
Moreover, competent resources speakers were invited to discuss about the DA’s programs like Hybrid Rice, Mechanization, Fishery, Credit, and Market.
Among the speakers were Engr. Marvin Manalang, Science Research Specialist II of DA- Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), Dr. Rodolfo Estigoy, PhD, Chief Science Research Specialist, Applied Communication Division, DA – Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PhilMech), Mr. Nazario Briguera, Chief Public Information Office, DA – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources on Fisheries (BFAR), Ms. Marissa Mohammad, Agri – Business and Marketing Division (AMAD) Supervising Agriculturist, Mr. Renato Barriero, Project Evaluation Officer, DA – Agricultural Credit Policy Council, and Mr. Charlito O. Brilleta, Regional Manager II, Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC).
Mr. Arturo Amparado, 62 years old, President of Ilaya Farmers Association in Dapitan City said he was more interested to avail the services and extension support of the Department of Agriculture knowing how to avail the program and its benefits. (ICabeguin/ DA9)
