Seven seed companies join the Hybrid rice field day held in barangay Blancia, Molave, Zamboanga del Sur to showcase different hybrid rice varieties that is suitable in the region. More than 1,000 farmers were invited all over the region to witness the harvest and participate in the techno briefing and forum.
The activity aims to promote hybrid rice to farmers and see for themselves the benefits in planting hybrid rice as to its yield per hectare compared to inbred rice.
Mr. Reynaldo Campomanes, Field Operations Chief of the Department of Agriculture IX (DA) said that this activity will give better impact to farmers to adopt hybrid rice. He further said that “the retention capacity on teaching and training farmers is only 10% but when this is coupled with a learning experience, retention increases to 30%. That’s why techno demos are very much effective. Each farmer will have the opportunity to know, learn and adopt.”
Assistant Regional Director Maria Melba B. Wee encouraged farmers to plant hybrid rice to increase farmer’s production. She even said that it’s about time for farmers to become businessman. They can consolidate their produce and sell it to offices through its cooperative.
With the said techno-demo, Molave Mayor Ireneo Q. Glepa was grateful for DA in choosing their municipality for the said location. It has given farmers the opportunity to choose which variety that is suitable in their respective areas.
The activity lasted for two days having two batches. Each batch had a field visit in a 10 hectare farm with seven briefing areas. Farmers will be allowed to interact with the seed companies and technicians assigned in the site. After the site visit they were asked to attend the Hybrid techno forum.
During the open forum, Ms. Evelyn Academia, Regional Rice Coordinator managed to answer the queries that pertain to DA. One of which is for the government to subsidize hybrid rice seeds. Ms. Academia replied that “we no longer have seed subsidy program for now.”
The Hybrid techno forum ended with thumbs up rating from the agriculture technicians and farmers. As a matter of fact Tampilisan Municipal Agriculturist Luisito Cerna suggested for another Hybrid Rice Techno forum and field day in Zamboanga del Norte.(ytavellaneda/DA9)
